A US man has drowned after falling into a frozen pond with his four-year-old son.

Kevin Howell, 51, Carmel city manager MaineWhile walking with her son early Friday morning, the two fell onto the ice of Lake Etna, about a half-mile from their home, the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook.

The sheriff's office said Howell had her son get him from the water to the ice and told him to get his mother.

After the boy ran home and told his mother what happened, she called 911 before rushing to the pool with an anchor and rope to help her husband.

She tied a rope to the bank, but fell through the ice and was unable to get out.

Penobscot Sheriff's Detective Jordan Norton, who was in the area, heard and responded to the 911 call.

The detective crawled across the “treacherous” snow, grabbing the rope as he went, and pulled the woman out.

Detective Norton takes her back home, where she is reunited with her son, but he cannot find her husband.

Six divers from the Maine Warden Service along with the Carmel Fire Department and one from the state police joined the search.

The city manager's body was eventually recovered 20 minutes later by two Warden Service divers around 2 p.m., the sheriff's office said.
