Patrick McHenry, a McCarthy ally and former speaker pro, will not seek re-election

GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry McHenry, of North Carolina, a ally of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Financial Services Committee chairman, will not seek re-election but plans to finish out his term, McHenry announced Tuesday.

“I believe there is a season for everything, and for me – this season has come to an end,” McHenry wrote on social media. “I look forward to what’s next for my family and me.”

McHenry served as Speaker Pro Tempore when McCarthy was ousted in October. He has made no secret of his distaste for how the process to oust McCarthy played out, perhaps most publicly for his vociferous clash following the historic vote to oust McCarthy.

As McCarthy’s strongest ally, McHenry played It plays an important role in successful negotiation Speaker of the California Republican Party in January by tearing apart some of the same hardline conservatives who opposed McCarthy’s leadership.
