What are war games?

Created by Dusty Rhodes in 1987, Wargames is one of the most unique matches in WWE, featuring two rings side-by-side, and has become a staple of the company since its introduction on NXT in 2017.

Both rings are surrounded by a roofless steel cage, and two or three teams compete. A competitor from each team starts in the ring and the match begins. Five minutes later, another competitor from one team enters the fray and gives a brief 2-on-1 advantage. After three minutes, a competitor from the trailing team moves into the asymmetric position. Then the teams alternate participants until all competitors are in the match.

A team wins by pinning or submitting a member of the other team.

The return of Randy Orton

After 18 months, “Viber” finally returns.

Randy Orton will return to WWE at Survivor Series as part of a team that takes on The Judgment Day in a men’s Wargames tournament. Cody Rhodes announced Orton’s arrival this week on “Monday Night Raw.”

The decorated star was sidelined in his May 2022 Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship match against The Usos on “SmackDown” with a legitimate back injury. Orton is missing SummerSlam 2022 as a result of injury, and Saturday will be his first appearance for WWE this year.

Why did Gunther need his rule?

As the WWE Universe learned with Gunther, the Boy is sacred, and that’s the magic that Survivor Series: Wargames wants to showcase.

The longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history will put his title on the line in Chicago on Saturday against someone he knows very well: eight-time champion The Miz.

On screen, Gunther showed no respect for The Miz, saying he was an entertainer, not a wrestler. Gunther sees The Miz’s entertainment aspect as a growing problem in WWE, he said, adding that the roster is “full of those guys.”

“I think one of the negative side effects over time is that people take themselves a little too seriously, and it’s not about that. It’s not about the individual,” he said. “It’s about the game, and the game is healthy. And yet, in this case, I’m the only one who really cares about it. So it’s my duty to defend those values a little bit against someone like The Miz who puts himself at the forefront.

“That is why my rule is necessary; To straighten things out a bit.”

Will CM Punk return to WWE?

With WWE holding another pay-per-view in the Chicago area, fans wondered: Will CM Punk return?

The former WWE Champion signed a massive contract with All Elite Wrestling in 2021, but was fired by the company for cause on September 2 after Punk got into an altercation backstage following the “All In” pay-per-view in London.

Since then, there has been huge speculation about Punk reuniting with WWE for the first time since 2014, with fans looking for any hint of a comeback. There was also hope that Punk was going to be the fifth member of Rhodes’ team at the Wargames tournament before Orton was announced as the final member of the team.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Punk will either stay at Survivor Series or not sign with WWE, but the company has had major surprises in recent years, including Rhodes’ return in 2022, so that can’t be completely ruled out. Out until the end of Survivor Series.
