A volcano erupted following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s east coast, sending ash miles into the air, state-run media reported.

The Shiveluch volcano is 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city of about 180,000 people located in Kamchatka, eastern Russia.

“According to visual estimates, the ash column is rising 8 kilometers (5 miles) above sea level,” TASS reported on Sunday morning local time, adding that the volcano was spewing lava.

There were no reports of people being injured, TASS reported.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was 55 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and was about 30 miles deep.

No “major damage” was caused by the earthquake, however, “buildings are now being examined for potential damage, with special attention being paid to social amenities,” TASS reported.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry did not issue a tsunami warning due to the earthquake, TASS reported.

Earlier, the US Tsunami Warning System had warned that “the earthquake could generate dangerous tsunami waves within 300 kilometers. [approx 186 miles] Centered along the coast of Russia.
