HP’s new Envy x360 laptop will be the first ‘IMAX’ PC

HP has revealed details of this year’s additions to its midrange (and generally good value) Envy lineup. This year, the company is offering webcams, fan blades and… IMAX?

Yeah, I’m not sure either. HP will announce its new HP Envy x360 15 (well, 15.6 inches, to be exact), available later this month for a starting price of $949.99, which it claims is the first “IMAX Enhanced Certified PC.” IMAX Enhanced means a Home Theater Certificate Program It’s been kicking around for a few years, but it’s usually just using TVs and projectors and stuff. Now, I think it’s on a laptop!

See? IMAX. in the flesh.

Like something like Intel’s Evo project, devices seeking IMAX Enhanced certification must meet a variety of standards, but the key is that they have the ability to display IMAX-shot content in an extended aspect ratio. Initially, it will be available for “select movies and shows”. With Disney Plus (which will have all the Marvel stuff, so that’s fine) support will start with more features.

The device will support “IMAX theatrical sound mixing” to “deliver a unique and exclusive fully immersive spatial audio experience, preserving the full dynamic range at the reference level.” why no?

It is 17.

Superhero stuff aside, the new Envy devices (including the 14-inch available now for $849.99 and the 17.3-inch model arriving in May for $1,149.99) have 5-megapixel cameras. HP says the camera, with its physical shutter and Windows Hello support, will make for a “significantly better camera” than last year’s Envy devices.

I’m also excited to see the introduction of a new fan design with 25 percent thinner blades, 58 percent longer blades, and 9 percent increased airflow. More ventilation is better! You can never have too much ventilation. That’s what I always say.

If you’re wondering about the chips, all three models come with 13th Gen Intel Core processors and Intel Iris Xe graphics. 15 and 17 are equipped with Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Mobile GPU.

Oh, and the 15-inch version also has an AMD Ryzen 7000 model with Radeon-integrated graphics. Intriguing! I hope they send it to me to review.
