Late Saturday, the board said in another Facebook post that the fire had reignited and issued a shelter-in-place order for a one-mile radius around the plant.
At a press conference Saturday night, Brunswick Mayor Cosby Johnson said the shelter-in-place order has been extended to the entire city limits because of the changing winds. Johnson also said he issued an emergency declaration to the city.
“Because we don’t know how much we can control this fire and we can’t predict where the wind is going to move, we thought it would be better to talk to our entire city, not just a piece of it,” Johnson said.
Major added that the city is opening a shelter for anyone who wants to leave.
Officials thanked nearby cities and counties, including Jekyll Island, Savannah, Wayne County, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida, for sending resources to help.
The origin of the fire was still unknown as of Saturday night, but it is under control, Brunswick Assistant Fire Chief Lawrence Cargill said.
“The latest report I have is that the flames are contained and under control with foam operations, and we’re going to continue those operations until the scene is fully contained,” Cargill said.
Nearby roads will be closed for a time Saturday night while air drops are conducted at the site, Glynn County officials said said on Facebook“Airplanes and helicopters” are en route to the fire.
Kimberly Michelle Edmond was advised to stay at the location earlier Saturday, He told CNN the fire was still burning around 5 p.m., and he could smell it from his mother’s house, about a mile away. Edmond said he felt a bit heady when he went outside, but didn’t describe the smell of the air as particularly bad.
