A computer hack of auto dealers’ software is the latest digital attack
Another cyber attack on software used by thousands of auto dealerships affects CDK Global.

A group that claims to have hacked software firm CDK Global is demanding several million dollars in ransom, Bloomberg reports.
CDK, which provides software to car dealerships in North America, wants to pay the ransom, but talks are subject to change. Bloomberg reports It quoted a person familiar with the situation.
Bloomberg reports that the group behind the hack is believed to be based in Eastern Europe.

The CDK internet outage reached its third straight day, affecting software management tools and improving operations at car dealerships across the US.
The company shut down most of its systems for customers Wednesday “out of an abundance of caution,” CDK spokeswoman Lisa Phinney said. According to a letter sent to customers, the company said it restored some systems later in the afternoon before shutting them down again when an additional cyber attack occurred.
“Out of continued caution and to protect our customers, we are once again shutting down most of our systems,” the letter said. “We are currently assessing the overall impact and consulting with external 3rd party experts.”
The company did not share an estimated time frame for when the systems would be back up and running. Dealerships continued to report problems with CDK systems on Friday.
