As the world’s best athletes compete for individual glory and national glory at the 2024 Paris Olympics, spectators will wonder which country will have the honor of winning the most medals.

With the Paris Games still under way, the United States, Japan and China, along with host France, led the medal count by Tuesday.

Team France and Team USA began this year’s tournament in a neck-and-neck battle for the most medals overall, with the country hosting the Games vs. 2028. The U.S. led Monday after strong showings in skateboarding, swimming and men’s gymnastics.

Simone Biles won the gold medal in the women’s gymnastics team to become an Olympic gymnast.

The women’s rugby sevens team also made Team USA history on Tuesday with its first medal in the bronze medal game against Australia. It was the first rugby medal for the United States since the men won gold at the 1924 Olympics in Paris.

USA has the largest delegation with 594 athletes. France follows closely behind with 571.

Japan tied China for the third-most medals by Monday evening, with a last-minute upset by the men’s gymnastics team and skateboarder Yoto Horikome. But China claimed the first gold of the tournament in the 10m air rifle mixed team event on Saturday morning.

French Olympians have already shown their range in various sports by winning medals in at least eight athletics. Meanwhile, the U.S. started strong in the water, with 11 of its early medals coming from swimming events.

The United States looks forward to repeating its strong presence 2020 Tokyo GamesWon 113 medals. Along with China’s 89 medals, it is significantly the most of any country.
