Royal Troon in Scotland will host the 2024 Open Championship, the first time it has hosted the British Open since 2016. Sweden’s Henrik Stenson won that year, and now Ludwig Aberg will try to become the second Swede to win a major. The 24-year-old finished runner-up at the Masters and held the 36-hole lead at the US Open as he bagged the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award. He will begin his 2024 Open Championship quest on Thursday at 4:47 a.m. ET in a group with Bryson DeCambeau and Tom Kim.
Aberg and DeCambeau are 9-1 in the 2024 Open Championship odds, trailing Scotty Scheffler (4-1) and Rory McIlroy (8-1). Aberg’s countryman, Stenson, is 200-1 in the latest Open Championship 2024 odds, tying him as the biggest longshot in the 2024 British Open field. A shocker from MacDonald: Overshadowing specialist Colin Morikawa (10-1), he’s too underpriced to fall behind in such a deep and talented field. With 10 straight top-25 players entering the Open, Morikawa’s run is hard to ignore. However, none of them really resulted in victories, as Morikawa often performed well early in the matches to struggle in the final round. His Round 4 scoring average of 70.77 ranks 128th on the PGA Tour, placing him in the bottom 30% of golfers.
Overall, SG: tee-to-green and SG: around-the-green, although the scorer is Morikawa’s weakness, as he ranks 66th in SG: putting. MacDonald cites Morikawa’s recent struggles not only at this major, but links courses as a whole as a reason to eclipse his two-time major winner. On the other hand, McDonald prefers Brooks Koepka’s value (25-1). His five major wins since 2017 are the most in the game and he has proven himself to be a big event golfer as no one else has more than the next two golfers. Even if he doesn’t win, his 11-5 streak in majors since 2017 sees his name at the top of the leaderboard. He missed 2016 at Royal Troon because of an ankle injury, but has four top-10s in his last seven Open Championship starts.
Koepka has been impressive this season, with a 54-hole win in Singapore in May and a pair of ninth-place finishes. He has impressive metrics on that tour, ranking in the top quarter of golfers in both driving distance (309.9 yards) and GIR percentage (70.37%). Both of those scores would rank in the top 20 on the PGA Tour this season.
