U.S. stocks ended the trading day on Tuesday mixed with the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ( ^IXIC ) the only major index to close the day in positive territory as Treasury yields remained a focus for investors.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was the day’s loser, falling about 0.5%, or more than 170 points, while the benchmark S&P 500 (^GSPC) fell 0.3%.
The 10-year Treasury yield was near 4.33% on Tuesday, a 16-year high. Yields have caught the attention of investors in recent weeks as nominal and inflation-adjusted Treasury yields have risen toward their highest levels since the financial crisis.
Notable moves on Tuesday included Dick’s Sporting Goods ( DKS ), which saw shares tumble 24% following a disappointing quarter that the company said was hit by increased theft at its stores.
Shares of Macy’s ( M ) also fell 14% after the retailer announced additional discounts to clear bloated shelves in the quarter.
